Taken at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo - Cleveland, OH
This is, obviously!, the polar bear at the Cleveland Zoo and when I arrived at the Northern Trek area to see him stretched out right in front of us. I got quite a few photos of this beautiful boy, but the ones where he was laying down with head between those massive paws just melted my heart. It makes you want to almost
reach out and pet his head. Almost.
Polar bears have typical bodies for animals found in the north with a large body and stocky legs built for strength and endurance and the polar bear is very close in species to the Grizzly (known as they can breed for hybrids). However, the climate of the arctic has placed selective pressures upon them to have large feet meant to distribute the weight better on snow and ice as well as propel them easier in the water, and they have textures upon the pads that help to provide additional traction in terrain that might be slippery.
