Beautiful Girl by tleach0608 Beautiful Girl by tleach0608
Taken at the Akron Zoo - Akron, OH

Today on my day off I used the cold, snowing weather as an opportunity to head out to the Akron Zoo and see the animals. As it turned out I was the only crazy person to think this as I was the first person there and this suited me fine because when I got to Shanti's exhibit, I got to interact with her a lot. She ran back and forth, leaping from rock to branch to hill, climbed up to the top of the enclosure and rubbed her face on the fencing as I told her what a beautiful girl she was, rubbed up against the glass where my hand was and she even "stalked" me as I hid behind one of the pillars and peeked out at her. You definitely don't get this on hot, crowded days!

Shanti is the female snow leopard at the Akron Zoo, meant to be the mate to Roscoe. I knew it was her because she has much more delicate features and of course the notch from her ear when Roscoe got too excited to see her back in February.

She is! I didn't get to see her after my most recent visit to the Zoo because they're replacing some glass in the exhibit, alas... =)

Hehehe How serendipitous!! I'd love to see them out in the wild, but I think if they played with me the way she did I might have ended up as a tasty snack. :giggle:

Thank you!! It was one of those great days where I had all the perfect conditions with lighting and alone time with the animal. She is fast becoming my favorite at that zoo. =D

well, from my point of view thatīs a high quality photo.
Good natural colours, very clear, nice bokeh and a good sharpness.
And at the end of the day you could think that Shanti smiles :-)

Thank you!! I was so happy with how this turned out--the overcast day gave just the right amount of diffused light and I do like using the maximum aperture of 5.6 for these shots so I can get enough of the face in focus while the background starts to blur out just right. This is one photo I look at and think "Oh wow, did I take that?"

And I think she does, indeed. For a little while that day she even had a little bit of a playmate.

Gorgeous animal. Wonderful shot!

It's hard not to anthropomorphise here and think she's posing prettily for you, with her coy look and paws placed just so. :) Sounds like a fun day at the zoo.

By the way, is this one of the first times you've let the D700 out of the cage, so to speak? You must be having a blast. ;)

Thanks!! And it is! I've been having some fun and whatnot around the house but today it came out in full force and I was pretty curious if I would end up missing the crop factor when shooting the zoo animals. I'm extremely happy to find that it's not anything I notice at all!

She really is! And encounters like this really make me smile and realize how lucky I am to be able to have them. Reason #7 why cats are better than kids! ;-)

She's gorgeous and so friendly! I remember when she first came here at the beginning of the year she seemed shy, now she's leaping all over the place and when I started telling her what a pretty girl she was, she leapt up to the top where there was only fencing and was rubbing all over it. It makes you forget she's a wild animal when she acts like that. =)
