Description

Ira Trailhead, Cuyahoga Valley National Park - Peninsula, OH

While on my way home from photographing the Everett Road covered bridge, driving along Riverview, I glanced over and saw Beaver Marsh and pulled a move out of Dukes of Hazzard practically to pull into the Ira Trailhead parking lot. But only because I feel like I've driven by a dozen times always meaning to stop and never stopping. So on Sunday I did and I think I've found one of my new favorite stopping places. A wide boardwalk cuts through Beaver Marsh allowing visitors to glimpse birds, herons and even beavers (no way, right?!). It's quiet and the people there were so reverent of the nature and animals around them.

I caught this photo before I started along the path toward the boardwalk, really enjoying the light that cut through the trees to light up some of the grass and that stump sticking out of the water. Even in a time where color is nearly faded from all around us, I caught some blues from the reflected sky, green from some surviving lily pads and just a hint of gold as the color clings to the trees for a few more days.

It's shot handheld and I regret that as I think I sacrificed some sharpness but I would have most likely missed the moment if I had gone back for my tripod. I think this is one shot that I think I want to capture during the peak of each season to see its transformation though, so I feel I'll definitely improve on it each time.

I find this photo to be unique in that it gives the sense of all four seasons within one frame. There's the bare branches of winter, the dead and dry grasses of autumn, the blue water and lighting of summer, and the green algae of spring. It's even more effective in that each season has its own little corner.

The symmetry within this piece is great, and I enjoy how the stream draws you into the stump at the horizon line.

Finally, the colours in this piece are breathtaking. It has an almost painterly quality. The blues especially are intense and vivid.

All in all, I've seen many shots down a stream or river like this, but yours is very much unique.
