Taken at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium - Columbus, OH
When I first came around to their enclosure, they were way in the back sleeping, but after I made my rounds around the North American portion of the zoo, I was very pleasantly surprised to find these ladies all trotting around and hanging out right in front of the glass!
This is one of the three female Mexican Wolves at the Columbus Zoo, she's the daughter to the alpha female, a mother wolf who has sired seventeen wolves total here at the Zoo. And since 1992, the wolves that they've cared for have actually sired a whopping twenty-nine! Considering how endangered these wolves are (a small number are in the wild, perhaps 200-250 are still in zoos), this is a huge feat for the Columbus Zoo.
None of these wolves are given names and they have a strict hands-off care for them so that they only have wolf interaction as a way to try and make reintroducing them back into the wild much easier on them. If there is no comfort around humans, they can be tricked and preyed on less easily.
