Taken at the Akron Zoo - Akron, OH
This is (I think) Jae-Jae, one of the three male Sumatran tigers, and brothers, that are living at the Akron Zoo. I didn't see him at first when I came up as he was on the far edge against the wall with the glass. Sneaky tiger, blending into the wide open space like that!
Sumatran tigers are the smallest of the surviving sub-species, with males averaging only around 300 pounds, but its small size lets them move through the dense rainforest. They have narrower stripes and a more "bearded" look, and most surprisingly they also have webbing between its toes that makes it an excellent swimmer.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, there are no more than 500 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, and much of their territory is unprotected and subject to human habitation and farming. The reserves that some are found on do not provide safety for this species and they become, sadly, prey to poachers.
